TRABUCCO sea fishing hooks

Fishing hooks play a vital role in the fishing system: they are the link between the fisherman and his prey.

They are a very ancient tool, used since the Stone Age. Initially, the structure was made of wood, a material, however, not suited to its intended purpose; later it was improved by the use of animal bones, spiny plants and shells, even to the thorns of the hawthorn tree in some parts of Europe.

The choice of fishing hooks should be based on the fish fauna present in the fishing spot, keeping in mind that it is not the angler who will be fooled by the bait.

Is it possible to make a prey selection based on the fishing hooks used?

The answer is partly affirmative. By using small fishing hooks, all fish (large and small) will be allowed to lure, resulting in unwanted specimens being brought to the wade. Using larger fishing hooks will avoid catching all fish that have a mouthparts such that ingestion of that type of bait will not be possible. N.B. one will often witness the paradox of luring really modest-sized specimens with generous fishing hooks: it is' the mystery of fishing.

Choosing the right fishing hooks is critical to the success of a line: how is it possible to choose the 'right hook?

The development of technology has brought a significant improvement in this component. If in the past it was considered essential to use fishing hooks with large dimensions for catching important prey , today we are witnessing the opposite trend: the continuous updating of this small tool has made it possible to go down considerably in the size used, which, by making possible a more natural movement of the bait, has made it possible to get more bites. (In Big Game it was unthinkable not to use at least 10/0 hooks; today, however, sizes ranging from 6/0 to 8/0 are preferred.)

The main factors influencing the choice of fishing hooks:

- Paddle fishing hooks are used for prey that are not large in size, but, on the other hand, possess a very thin wire. A large diameter terminal does not allow knots to be tied on this type of hook.

- Eyelet fish hooks are used for more combative prey because very strong knots can be used for their insertion within the fishing system. The eyelet allows splices even with large terminals.

- The curvature of the hook is important for two factors: penetration inside the prey's mouthparts ; the use of bait with larger size

- Warping, which is the presence of a difference in height between the hook tip and the shank (this is what allows us to call a hook "crooked"). To assess whether a hook is warped, simply lay it on flat and note whether the tip is pointing up or down.

- Theself-fertilizing hook is distinguished by its "G" shape and is used for fishing for sizable specimens that make an abrupt escape following the bite. They do not require shoeing by the angler.

- Thenon-self-ferring hook, following the biting of the fish, will pin slightly inside the mouth of the prey: a vigorous shoeing will be needed to ensure a good fight.

- A long shank hook is preferable for baiting worms, earthworms and other baits with an elongated shape. The downside is the fact that excessive shank length results in a lower angle of penetration into the fish's mouthparts.

A short shank hook will generally be preferable in fights with large prey because of the better penetration inside the mouth. It is not recommended for hooking worms and annelids as it will ruin the bait in a short time.

- The size of the hook to be used is based on a double choice: a bait with a large size naturally requires a generously sized hook; on the other hand, a prey with a small mouth does not allow the use of hooks that are too large.

- The hook thread must be balanced to the type of prey and the type of bait. A hook with thin wire will make bait movement more natural but will break during the most difficult fights; a hook with thick wire will be used with combative fish, but not with live bait (such as shrimp in bass fishing) that would die within minutes.

- The presence or absence of thebarb to obtain the possibility to perform catch and release with ease.
